Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku has issued a very honest assessment of the start to his second season at the Etihad Stadium having scored a vital goal on Saturday.

The Belgian international forward scored a match-sealing goal for the Premier League champions at the weekend having rifled an effort into the top-right corner and beyond a helpless Bernd Leno in a flash.

That strike now moves Doku into the position of third-highest goalscorer for Manchester City so far this season with two goals to his name, behind only Mateo Kovacic’s three goals, and Erling Haaland’s 11 to date this campaign.

Speaking to Manchester City’s official club website after the game, the Belgium international forward admitted that whilst the start to the season has not been his best, he is seeing improvements in his own game that will give everyone and himself plenty of confidence.

“Obviously my second season I wanted to be better than my first season. I’m happy with the performance today,” said Doku. “I think the last couple of performances were better from me. The start of the season I haven’t been on my best level, my best form.”

He continued, “But the last couple of games I’ve been better. So I hope just to be better and better, and then I know the statistics are going to come. So that’s what I’m looking for.”

One player who was on similarly excellent form against Fulham on Saturday afternoon was goalkeeper Ederson, who was called into action on several occasions to deny counter-attacks from the visitors, particularly from the ever-dangerous Adama Traore.

On the subject of the Brazilian, Jeremy Doku said, “I don’t think there is any doubt about how good he is as a keeper. He’s saved us a lot, not only in this game, but he’s always there to help us, even with the ball. A very reliable keeper!”

Jeremy Doku is viewed as a hugely impactful player in certain matches by Pep Guardiola, adding a very different dimension to the attacking line that Manchester City fans will be used to through Jack Grealish.
