Manchester City star’s mother hits out at “bad and unhappy people” trying to “destroy” her son’s career with “pure fake news”
The mother of Manchester City and Portugal international Matheus Nunes has hit out at “bad and unhappy people” for “trying to destroy” her son’s career.
Reports earlier this week claimed that the 26-year-old midfielder was at the centre of an arrest in the Spanish capital of Madrid last month, as he attended a nightclub with friends during the international break.
Having come across a 58-year-old man in the toilets trying to take photos of him, it was claimed by Spanish newspaper El Mundo that the Manchester City man snatched the mobile phone in anger and refused to hand it back.
Nunes is claimed to have been arrested at the time when police were called and found the phone still on him, before taking him to a local police station for further questioning, when he was later released following intervention from a lawyer.
Local media in England have already denied large elements of the story, particularly the claims that Matheus Nunes was arrested and could face further trial and charges later down the line, with the term ‘exaggerated’ used by the Manchester Evening News.
Now speaking exclusively to PL Brasil’s Guilherme Ramos, Catia Nunes – the mother of Manchester City midfielder, Matheus – has hit back at claims from Spanish media reporting on an incident in Madrid last month.
“Look, this is all a big lie, these are bad and unhappy people trying to destroy my son’s career,” Catia Nunes exclaimed in response to suggestions that her son was arrested in the Spanish capital for stealing a phone at a nightclub.
“Pure fake news,” she continued. “He really did go to Madrid with friends, but nothing they are saying (about the alleged crime) is true.”
Matheus Nunes is currently on a run of appearances and improved game time for Manchester City following a challenging first season with the club, starting in the UEFA Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava this week.
Nunes also scored his first goal at the Etihad Stadium last week as Manchester City cruised past Championship side Watford in a 2-1 win, despite a late scare from Tom Ince to test Pep Guardiola’s side’s concentration.
