Manchester City face Premier League competition for Bundesliga right-back

Premier League champions Manchester City face stern competition in the race to sign exciting Bundesliga right-back, Jeremie Frimpong in the coming transfer windows.

The Etihad Stadium club may be entering into a phase where they require significant attention placed onto a potential long-term replacement for current club captain Kyle Walker, with the veteran defender now 33-years-old.

That transfer attention comes despite Rico Lewis’ continued rapid rise in the Manchester City first-team squad, with Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff viewing the England international as a strong solution to midfield tactical requirements.

On several occasions this season alone, the Manchester City academy graduate has started contests in the right-back role, before venturing into the defensive midfield role to assist with phases of play when in possession.

However, the emergence of more natural solutions in the right-back role within the European scene could attract Manchester City towards doing business in the transfer window, with a new name continuing to excel in the German game.

According to the information of Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, both Manchester United and Manchester City are keen on signing Bayer Leverkusen and the Netherlands international defender, Jeremie Frimpong.

One club that have seemingly been ruled out of the running for the player is Liverpool, with the report stating that they have “no urgency” when it comes to the breakthrough Bundesliga star due to the emergence of Conor Bradley.

The 23-year-old most notably had a £35 million release clause available during the recent summer transfer window at Bayer Leverkusen, but that was not activated by any club interested at that time.

The 23-year-old has history at the City Football Academy and with Manchester City, having joined the club at the age of just nine-years-old and spending nine years with the club in his development at youth level.

Having progressed through Manchester City’s esteemed youth ranks over almost a decade, with regular appearances in both Premier League 2 and UEFA Youth League competition, Frimpong signed a four-year deal with Scottish Premier League champions, Celtic.

An excellent two-year spell with the Scottish giants would then attract transfer attention from Bayer Leverkusen, and Frimpong’s career whilst working under Xabi Alonso in Germany has sky-rocketed as a result.
