Bundesliga insider confirms Manchester City “in the race” to sign Paris Saint-Germain superstar
Manchester City are the among the clubs “in the race” to sign Paris Saint-Germain and Netherlands international superstar Xavi Simons, according to a report.
It comes as the Premier League champions continue to be linked with a long list of names as potential long-term replacements for the ageing Kevin De Bruyne, who is also into the final year of his Etihad Stadium contract.
Many supporters believe that the task of replacing the legendary Belgian playmaker will require significant investment on a star name and a profile of player that is ready made to come in and perform immediately for Manchester City.
As such, that has drawn the attentions of supporters over to the Bundesliga in recent weeks and months, and certainly after the recent European Championships, with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen’s respective stars, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz tipped for big moves.
However, a new report has suggested that the aforementioned Germany international duo may not be alone on Manchester City’s list of marquee attacking midfield signings, with a further star name on the international scene attracting watchful eyes.
That is according to the information of Bundesliga insider and BILD reporter Christian Falk, who states that Manchester City are among the clubs that should be considered as ‘in the race’ for Paris Saint-Germain’s Xavi Simons.
“Xavi Simons also has the same clubs interested in him. Liverpool have a coach (in Arne Slot) who can speak the same language. There’s a Dutch coach also present at Manchester United (in Erik ten Hag). So, these offer huge chances for either club,” Falk explains.
He continued, “United and Liverpool were interested in the player historically, but also Manchester City are in the race and he would be a perfect fit for Pep Guardiola’s system.
“He’s more likely to go to the Premier League than (Florian) Wirtz. Along with (Jamal) Musiala, there could very well be three transfer jewels on the market next year.”
Manchester City would hope that their current Netherlands star Nathan Ake could play a role in drawing the player towards the Etihad Stadium, should they intend on solidifying their interest with a concrete offer in future.
The versatile defender is currently sidelined with a muscular injury sustained during the recent international break, withdrawn from a 2-2 draw between the Netherlands and Germany having chased a loose ball before clutching his hamstring.
Pep Guardiola has already indicated that the former AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea man could return to duties for Manchester City towards the end of October, or around the time of the next international break which takes place that month.
