New report reveals Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly booked for ‘unsporting behaviour’ against Manchester City
Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly was cautioned by referee Michael Oliver for ‘unsporting behaviour’ during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City.
The match was marred by controversy throughout, with some believing that the contest between the Premier League’s top two teams from the last two seasons saw ‘needle’ added into the rivalry for the first time.
Leandro Trossard’s first-half dismissal via a second yellow card for delaying the restart of play saw Mikel Arteta’s side revert to a nine-man defence in an attempt to protect their 1-2 first-half lead for the remainder of the contest.
However, Manchester City’s relentless pressure resulted in a 98th minute John Stones equaliser courtesy of their 28th shot of the second 45 minutes, with full-time met with tension between the likes of Erling Haaland and Arsenal players.
Post-match interviews from the likes of Manuel Akanji, Bernardo Silva, and John Stones would appear to indicate frustration from the part of Manchester City’s camp over the manner in which Arsenal conducted themselves throughout the second-half.
And a new report has pointed towards one example of the antics showcased by Arsenal in an attempt to frustrate Manchester City and slow the game down, with a clear moment of gamesmanship from one player and orchestrated by Mikel Arteta.
According to information detailed by MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly was cautioned by referee Michael Oliver for ‘unsporting behaviour’ after appearing to relay a message to goalkeeper David Raya during Sunday’s draw at Manchester City.
Michael Oliver reportedly observed Arsenal’s 17-year-old communicating with Raya before the Arsenal goalkeeper fell to the floor and stopped proceedings, before returning to the group of substitutes before receiving his yellow card prior to a single minute of professional football.
The report points out that Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta used the break in play as a result of David Raya requiring medical attention to deliver a team talk to nine of his outfield players, in an attempt to solidify their lead at that stage of the game.
Manchester City will now not take on Arsenal until the new year, when the expected Premier League title challengers are set to go head-to-head at the Emirates Stadium in their reverse top-flight fixture.
Between now and then, both sides will have to contend with multiple competitions, and Pep Guardiola’s side will likely have to do so without the performances of Rodri, who is set to be ruled out for the most-part of the season with a serious knee injury.
City return to action on Tuesday night with a meeting against Watford in the Carabao Cup third round, before travelling north to face Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime.
