AC Milan among clubs monitoring Joao Cancelo’s situation at Manchester City
Joao Cancelo is now subject to interest from AC Milan, according to a new report, as his struggles at Manchester City continue this season.
The Portugal international has endured another difficult spell in his City career since returning from international commitments at the FIFA World Cup last month, struggling for both form and game time under Pep Guardiola.
The Manchester City boss has often opted to utilise Nathan Ake in the left-sided full-back position, while teenage breakthrough talent Rico Lewis has largely occupied the right-back position ahead of both Cancelo and Kyle Walker.
That has left question marks around Joao Cancelo’s future at the club, and whether Pep Guardiola may be moving on from a player who suffered during his early stages of his City career but then excelled in the left-back role in Premier League title-winning campaigns.
Given the uncertainty surrounding the 28 year-old’s future at the Etihad Stadium, it will come as no surprise to find out that a number of Europe’s premier clubs are keeping an eye on his situation with intrigue.
One such club, according to a new report from Martin Blackburn for The Sun, is Serie A giants AC Milan, who are said to be among ‘several’ sides monitoring Joao Cancelo’s ongoing situation at Manchester City.
Interest from the San Siro could potentially spark an opening elsewhere for City in the summer transfer window, who are known to hold admiration in a number of the Rossoneri’s first-team talents.
Wide forward Rafael Leao is a player that the Premier League champions are continuing to monitor closely during the second-half of the season, with City’s attacking line being an area that Etihad officials are understood to be wanting to strengthen – should the right deal become available.
Additionally, France international left-back Theo Hernandez is another player that City admire, with that area of Pep Guardiola’s side having been arguably a problem position ever since the departures of the likes of Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy.
