FA and Premier League make decision on potential Erling Haaland punishment after ball thrown at Arsenal’s Gabriel
The Football Association have confirmed their decision over potential retrospective punishment taken against Erling Haaland for one moment on Sunday afternoon.
The Norway international was at the centre of plenty of drama during Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the weekend, both through his performances and goalscoring antics, as well as his brilliance in terms of adding needle to a footballing rivalry.
Putting his side ahead inside 10 minutes, Erling Haaland combined with Savinho to break beyond Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, before poking the ball beyond a helpless and onrushing David Raya.
Arsenal’s low-block of nine-men in the second-half would frustrate the Norwegian and limit him to very few opportunities, however John Stones’ equaliser in the eighth minute of additional time gave him plenty to celebrate and shout about following the visitors’ dark arts.
One particular moment saw Erling Haaland pick up the ball after John Stones had scored, before throwing it off the back of Gabriel Magalhaes’ head and running away in celebration with his Manchester City teammates.
Some believed that the incident was worthy of further action and potential punishment from referee Michael Oliver, however information has now surfaced that clarifies what took place on the field after the incident, and whether any action can now be taken after the fact.
As per clarification from MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, it has been confirmed that the Video Assistant Referee reviewed the incident involving Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhaes after Manchester City’s equaliser against Arsenal, and deemed that no action was necessary.
As such, it has now been confirmed that the Manchester City striker will not face any retrospective punishment over the incident, making himself available for the club’s upcoming Premier League encounter against Newcastle United on Saturday lunchtime.
Manchester City will return to action just 49 hours after the conclusion of their hotly-contested meeting with Arsenal in the Premier League, as they welcome Championship side Watford to the Etihad Stadium.
The two sides meet in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with Manchester City originally issued with the option of switching the game to Thursday night of this week, but playing the game away from home at Vicarage Road.
Having taken the decision to reject such an offer, Manchester City are understood to have felt it more beneficial to spend more time resting ahead of their next Premier League encounter against Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.
