Manchester City begin their latest UEFA Champions League pursuit with a home clash against Inter Milan in the revamped ‘league phase’ of the competition.

Pep Guardiola’s side, along with all other participants in Europe’s premier club tournament, will be entering unknown territory this season, with a 36-team league format requiring an all-out approach to ensure a best-possible finish in the division.

City will no doubt be among the favourites to finish in the top-eight positions within the league, and as such secure automatic qualification for the last-16 of the tournament in 2025, but face a strong run of fixtures.

Manchester City do however have a strong run of form that will give them plenty of confidence coming into Wednesday night’s meeting, having recorded four successive wins in the Premier League, and Erling Haaland scoring nine goals in those matches.

As for Inter Milan, they also remain unbeaten in the Italian top-flight, winning two of their opening four matches and drawing the other two fixtures, with their most recent outing being a 1-1 draw away to Monza.

City have a largely fully-fit squad available for selection on Wednesday night, with only Nathan Ake and Oscar Bobb being the first-team absentees, with the former expected to return around the start of the next international break in October.

Ahead of the confirmed team news from the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, some initial information has began to filter throughout social media from journalists and sources regarding Manchester City’s starting line-up.

It can firstly be pointed out that both Jacob Wright and Nico O’Reilly both started for Manchester City’s Under-19 squad in their UEFA Youth League opener against Inter’s Under-19 squad at the City Football Academy.

As such, both teenage midfielders can be considered unlikely to play any part in tonight’s senior match-up at the Etihad Stadium, but may yet be considered to make up the numbers from the substitutes bench.

Pep Guardiola and Simone Inzaghi are expected to confirmed their respective Manchester City and Inter Milan starting line-ups around 18:45 (UK) on Wednesday night.
