Manchester City have an “incredible weapon” that they “have to use”, reveals Pep Guardiola
Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City attacking system possess an “incredible weapon” in their forward line that starts from their goalkeepers.
The tactical revelation emerged after Manchester City secured yet another victory in the top-flight this season, dismissing of Brentford on matchday four of the new Premier League season to maintain a 100 per cent winning record so far.
Victory over Thomas Frank’s side follows wins over Chelsea, Ipswich, and West Ham prior to the international break, whilst the clash against the London club at the Etihad Stadium was arguably their toughest challenge yet.
An early goal from Yoane Wissa to capitalise on a defensive error from Manchester City was responded to by two Erling Haaland strikes, one of which saw the Norwegian frontman combine with goalkeeper Ederson, who claimed an assist in the process.
Speaking after a fourth consecutive victory in this season’s Premier League campaign, Pep Guardiola admitted that the route to goal from their goalkeepers directly to Haaland is an “incredible weapon” that they simple have to use.
“For us he’s an incredible weapon, when he’s one-against-one when you isolate him with a central defender with the quality that you have with Ederson and Stefan (Ortega) with the long balls and long passes,” Guardiola said.
“It’s a weapon that we have to explode, we have to use it, and the best way is 93 minutes or 92 minutes forgetting and just playing.”
Haaland’s goal tally for the new season now stands at nine, which is more than any other entire club in the Premier League has scored as a collective after the opening four matches of the campaign.
Amongst that output, Erling Haaland has also scored two hat-tricks with back-to-back trebles coming against Ipswich Town and West Ham United, whilst the 24-year-old had plenty of opportunities to make it three hat-tricks in a row against Brentford.
Haaland will now be looking towards their home UEFA Champions League encounter against Inter Milan in the league phase of the competition, as he stands just one goal away from a century in a Manchester City shirt after what would be just 104 appearances.
