West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui has made a huge claim regarding Manchester City’s current squad and their position in football history.

The reigning English top-flight champions have started their search of yet more silverware history and broken records this season in perfect style, having recorded three wins from their opening three Premier League outings.

That record in the division followed the first piece of silverware claimed in the 2024/25 campaign, defeating Manchester United in the traditional curtain-raiser to the Premier League season in the FA Community Shield.

Wins over Chelsea and Ipswich Town were followed up by an equally impressive showing, especially in an attacking sense, against West Ham prior to the international break, with Erling Haaland scoring seven goals in those three contests.

Speaking during a recent conversation, and in light of Manchester City’s 1-3 win over his West Ham side prior to the international break, West Ham’s Julen Lopetegui sensationally claimed that Pep Guardiola’s squad are the best in football history.

“Erling Haaland is an excellent player, the best striker in the world,” Lopetegui admitted, after the Norway international struck a remarkable hat-trick beyond his Hammers rearguard at the London Stadium.

“And Manchester City, I repeat, are the best team in history,” he continued in huge praise for the reigning Premier League champions.

Manchester City will return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Brentford to the Etihad Stadium, in the first of seven matches before the next international break of the ongoing season.

That run of matches will also see the return of UEFA Champions League and Carabao Cup action to the schedule undertaken by Pep Guardiola’s players, including the revamped League Phase of the European competition.

The League Cup schedule has caused plenty of controversy in the meantime, with Manchester City’s home clash against Watford coming just one day of rest after a Premier League meeting against Arsenal.
