Pep Guardiola reveals Phil Foden fitness blow in triple update ahead of West Ham clash
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that Phil Foden is a doubt for Saturday’s visit to West Ham at the London Stadium.
The Englishman missed Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium last weekend due to illness, and has been absent from first-team training at the City Football Academy in the build-up to Saturday evening’s clash in east London.
Foden was named in the Lee Carsley’s England squad for international fixtures next month, with Rico Lewis, Jack Grealish and John Stones also named in the squad to face Ireland and Finland.
The PFA Player of the Year has played just 45 minutes for the Sky Blues so far this season, featuring in the second-half at Stamford Bridge during the 0-2 win over Chelsea.
Foden is a doubt for Saturday’s visit to the London Stadium, with Pep Guardiola revealing that the 24-year-old “still doesn’t feel good” after suffering a bout of sickness.
Manchester City could have midfield pair Mateo Kovacic and Rodri in contention for Saturday’s clash against West Ham, with Rodri having been absent for the first weeks of the new campaign due to a hamstring injury suffered at the European Championship.
Kovacic could also make his third successive start of the season against the Hammers, with Guardiola providing a positive update on the fitness of the Croatian after an injury scare in the second-half against Ipswich.
Speaking about the midfield pair, Guardiola said that both are “much better” having trained with the squad this week.
Manchester City are looking to stretch their unbeaten streak against West Ham to 20 consecutive matches this weekend, and clinched their record-breaking fourth successive Premier League title with a win over the Hammers back in May.
West Ham secured their first Premier League win of the Julen Lopetegui reign against Crystal Palace last weekend, and also beat Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup in midweek.
