Manchester City’s eight UEFA Champions League Group Stage opponents revealed – major away clash confirmed

Manchester City’s opponents for the Group Stage of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League have been revealed.

Pep Guardiola’s side will bid for fresh Champions League glory during the 2024/25 season, with the possibility that the current campaign could be the Catalan manager’s last with Manchester City, as the 53-year-old is out of contract at the Etihad Stadium in 2025.

Manchester City won the Champions League for the first time under the management of Guardiola in 2023, famously lifting the trophy in Istanbul after a 1-0 win over Inter Milan, as part of an historic treble triumph.

The Sky Blues were dramatically dumped out of the competition at the quarter-final stage last season, suffering a penalty shoot-out loss to Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side going on to lift the Champions League trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Manchester City qualified for the Champions League as a result of their Premier League title success, with the Cityzens having lifted the English top-flight trophy for a record-breaking fourth consecutive season in May.

The Champions League has been reformed for the new campaign however, with the Group Stage now taking place between September and January, and Manchester City being part of a 36-team league instead of a four-team group.

Manchester City will play eight matches against eight different opponents as part of the league-phase, and must finish in the top eight of the overall table to automatically qualify for the last-16.

The 36 teams were divided into four pots of nine teams, each based on their UEFA club coefficient, with clubs drawn to face two opponents from each of the four pots – one at home and one away. 

The draw took place on Thursday evening, with Manchester City’s eight opponents for the Champions League Group Stage now confirmed!
