From David Ornstein: Atletico Madrid ‘exploring’ transfer of £53 million Manchester City midfielder
Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes is the subject of late transfer interest from Atletico Madrid.
The La Liga side, who have made a number of high-profile additions from the Premier League already this summer, are considering making a move for a second member of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad, following the club-record sale of Julian Alvarez.
Alvarez ended a two-year stay at Manchester City to complete a major switch to the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano, with the transfer deal worth a total of €95 million, making the Argentinian the Blues’ most expensive player sale.
Atletico Madrid have also completed the signing of former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, and are additionally considering adding another midfielder from the English top-flight during the final week of the transfer window.
Diego Simeone’s side are ‘exploring’ a late move for Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes according to David Ornstein, with the 26-year-old having only moved to the Etihad Stadium from Wolves for £53 million last September.
Nunes was signed by Manchester City in the aftermath of Kevin De Bruyne suffering a long-term hamstring injury, and the Portugal international won three trophies during his debut season in east Manchester, lifting the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
The midfielder featured as a late substitute during Saturday’s 4-1 win over Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium, but made just 14 starts for the Sky Blues during the previous 2023/24 season.
David Ornstein reveals that Manchester City are yet to receive an official offer from Atletico Madrid for Nunes, however the Spanish side are ‘exploring’ the possibility of signing the 26-year-old on loan before Friday’s transfer deadline.
Manchester City have reportedly not yet made a decision on the future of the midfielder, despite completing the re-signing of Ilkay Gundogan from FC Barcelona last week on a free transfer.
Guardiola’s side have chosen to retain the services of James McAtee for the 2024/25 season, with the midfielder having previously spent time on loan at Bramall Lane with Sheffield United.
