Manchester City star drops cryptic nine-word message on social media connected to uncertain future
Joao Cancelo has dropped a nine-word cryptic message on his social media in relation to ongoing uncertainty surrounding his Manchester City future.
The Portugal international is back in Manchester and has been for the most part of the summer weeks, having seen his season-long loan spell with FC Barcelona expire at the end of the 2023/24 season with no immediate revival of a deal lined up.
Cancelo has been patient in waiting for the La Liga side to reignite their interest, and more importantly find the necessary finances to fund either a loan deal, or a permanent agreement at Manchester City’s valuation – which is understood to be in excess of £25 million.
However, with only a matter of days remaining in the transfer market, Joao Cancelo remains at work with Manchester City, and has been snubbed by Pep Guardiola when deciding upon his matchday squad for both of the club’s competitive fixtures.
As all parties working around Joao Cancelo continue to identify a potential solution for the player this summer, the 30-year-old has taken to his official social media account to drop somewhat of a cryptic message surrounding his future.
In a new post on his official Instagram channel, outcast defender Joao Cancelo has hinted towards confusion and uncertainty surrounding his Manchester City future by posting a series of photos accompanied by the caption, “I’m the only one that knows who I am”.
It remains to be seen what Manchester City, alongside the player’s agent Jorge Mendes, can source for Cancelo in the final few days of the summer market, despite Pep Guardiola remaining open to the idea of reintegrating the player into his plans.
Speaking during a recent press conference, manager Pep Guardiola was keen to insist on his belief in Cancelo’s footballing abilities, explaining, “I’ve never doubted about his qualities for one second, but I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
The City manager continued, “In training we say ‘hi’, we talk, and trained. That’s all. About what’s going to happen, it depends on his agent and the club. And at the end, if he has to stay, we will treat him like all the other players we have done since I’ve been here.”
Manchester City return to Premier League duties on Saturday afternoon as they welcome newly-promoted Ipswich Town to the Etihad Stadium, and it remains to be seen whether Guardiola will make it three competitive fixtures in succession without Joao Cancelo.
