Manchester City officials have placed what is being described as a ‘big new contract offer’ on the table for defensive midfield superstar Rodrigo, according to reports.

The latest development concerning the future of Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad coincides with ongoing recruitment plans to add to the options available to the Catalan coach for what is expected to be another season in excess of 60 matches.

Ilkay Gundogan is on the verge of completing a sensational return to the Etihad Stadium just one year on from leaving the club for FC Barcelona on a free transfer, whilst Manchester City are also scouring the market for new striker options.

As part of their search for the latter, Celtic and Japan international Kyogo Furuhashi has emerged as a player of interest, although Manchester City are yet to make their mind up as to whether the 29-year-old is the best possible solution for their vacant back-up striker role.

Simultaneously, the same department within the Etihad offices are eyeing a contract renewal for one of their most integral players, amid some slight concern within quarters that Real Madrid hold an admiration with a view towards a potential proposal in the coming seasons.

According to the information of The Athletic’s Manchester City correspondent Sam Lee, Spain international Rodri has now seen a ‘big new contract offer’ placed on the table by Manchester City, in recognition of his outstanding achievements for the club in recent seasons.

It is pointed out that Rodri’s current deal expires in summer 2027 and Manchester City want to tie him down, whilst also being ready to make him one of the club’s biggest earners, close to Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland.

Having taken the 2019/20 season to bed himself into Manchester City’s operation, many have viewed Rodri as Manchester City’s most vital component since his switch from Atletico Madrid, and the club’s record in matches where he has been absent largely proves that suggestion.

City have identified the need for suitable support for Rodri this season as a priority in the transfer market, and that has ultimately led them to the re-signing of Ilkay Gundogan, who would be accepting of not being a vital starter in every contest.

Rodri is expected to return to Manchester City training ground activities this week, having been granted an extended break from the club’s operation following his duties with Spain in their European Championship success in Germany this summer.
