How an Ilkay Gundogan return could provide Pep Guardiola a second chance to fulfil his 25-word dream
Manchester City’s reported interest in re-signing Ilkay Gundogan could provide Pep Guardiola a shock opportunity to fulfil a previously discussed dream.
The German international has been linked with a sensational potential return to the Etihad Stadium, just one year after signing for FC Barcelona on a free transfer from Manchester City, following a seven-year stay in east Manchester.
Gundogan quit Manchester City after captaining the Sky Blues to an historic treble, as Pep Guardiola’s side clinched the Premier League, Emirates FA Cup and UEFA Champions League during the 2022/23 season.
The 33-year-old was Guardiola’s first signing at Manchester City in 2016, moving to the Premier League from Borussia Dortmund for £20 million, and signing an initial four-year contract.
Gundogan made 304 appearances over seven seasons for Manchester City, winning 14 trophies and scoring 60 goals, including a famous brace against both Aston Villa and Manchester United to win both the Premier League title and FA Cup.
The German, who featured at the European Championship this summer, made 51 appearances during his debut season at the Camp Nou, but is reportedly considering quitting the Catalan club in a shock transfer decision.
According to the information of The Athletic’s Pol Ballus, Manchester City are interested in the possibility of bringing Ilkay Gundogan back to the Etihad Stadium, with a return potentially allowing Guardiola to fulfil an unexpected dream.
Speaking back in 2023, Gundogan revealed: “I think maybe Pep was hoping that we would come here to City together and leave together, but I know that he understands my decision.”
Guardiola is out of contract at Manchester City in 2025, with a return for Gundogan potentially providing the Catalan coach the opportunity to depart alongside his first Manchester City signing.
Manchester City are additionally hopeful of extending Guardiola’s contract for a fourth time, something the 53-year-old is yet to rule out.
