Manchester City reach agreement with Liverpool winger over five-year deal – Club willing to pay €70 million
Premier League champions Manchester City have reportedly struck an agreement with Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, according to a staggering new report from Spain today.
The latest development concerning Pep Guardiola’s squad comes as Julian Alvarez finalised and put pen to paper on a long-term agreement at Atletico Madrid, with Manchester City striking a big-money agreement with the La Liga side.
It is widely understood that the total package for the Argentina international striker is worth €95 million, with the side from the Spanish capital paying an initial transfer fee of €75 million with the remainder of the agreement coming in potential add-ons.
There has been plenty of conversation regarding Manchester City seeking a replacement for Julian Alvarez in the remaining weeks of the summer transfer window, but the presence of Erling Haaland as a mainstay in the leading striker role complicates matters.
Nevertheless, the latest report has linked Etihad Stadium officials with a remarkable move for one of their direct Premier League rivals’ primary attacking threats, with information pointing towards a total agreement with the player himself.
According to the information of journalist Marcos Benito, there is now an ‘agreement’ in place between Manchester City and Liverpool winger, Luis Diaz over a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium for the attacker.
The Premier League champions would still have to reach a compromise with the Anfield club however, and the report for El Chiringuito claims that Etihad Stadium bosses would be willing to pay €70 million for the forward.
Benito explained, “The most important movement of the summer, it is about Luis Díaz, the wide Colombian from Liverpool.
“They just told me that he has an agreement with Manchester City, an agreement of Luis Díaz with Manchester City, a five-season contract, City is willing to pay €70 million.
“They tell me that the agreement between the player and the club is total, we will see what happens with Liverpool if he finally ends up accepting, but right now this is what is comes to me. Luis Díaz has an offer from Manchester City for five seasons in exchange for €70 million.”
It remains highly unlikely from the viewpoint of Manchester City supporters that the club would pursue a deal for the Colombia international, given the strength in depth at Pep Guardiola’s disposal in wide positions.
Then again, the Etihad club are likely to be assessing the market for potential options to come into the club following Alvarez’s move to Atletico Madrid. Whether or not City would be willing to issue such a significant financial outlay remains to be seen.
Manchester City will remain focussed on events on the field for the time being, with their next contest seeing the club open up their Premier League account with a meeting against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
