Manchester City still retain four key first-team stars that will be too strong for Arsenal in the hunt for the Premier League crown this season, according to Jamie Carragher.

The two clubs have largely gone directly head-to-head for the last two Premier League titles, with Pep Guardiola and his players coming out on top in both of those battles to break a significant English top-flight record.

Success in the Premier League last season meant Manchester City became the first club in the history of English football to win four successive top-flight titles, making it six Premier League crowns won in Pep Guardiola’s eight seasons in charge.

But with Arsenal further strengthening their squad this summer, and Manchester City having largely stood still in the way of arrivals and allowed first-team players to leave in big-money departures, some are wondering whether this could finally be Mikel Arteta’s year.

Speaking during an exclusive conversation with magazine FourFourTwo, Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has pointed towards four of Pep Guardiola’s first-team names that will ensure they remain too strong for Arsenal in the Premier League title chase.

“I can only see Arsenal or City really (in the hunt for the Premier League title),” Carragher admitted. “I know people are talking about Arsenal because they’ve gone close twice and they’re really close to making that next step.”

He continued, “But I still look at Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva, and I think that is still better than what Arsenal have got. I think Arsenal are one attacking player short.

“They’ve got Bukayo Saka but the other two in terms of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard, I think they need one more who’s pretty special to take over from Manchester City.”

Manchester City’s only big-money signing to date this summer has been the recruitment of Brazilian international Savinho, whom Etihad Stadium bosses beat several top European clubs to in a £33.6 million package including add-ons.

There are big hopes for the player this season, with Pep Guardiola believing that the 20-year-old has the ability to star on both wings for the club, whilst also competing in the mainstay right-wing berth alongside Oscar Bobb.
