Contract terms, loan fee, first reactions: Luke Mbete joins Northampton Town on season-long loan
Manchester City defender Luke Mbete has completed a season-long loan move to Northampton Town.
The 20-year-old has completed his latest temporary exit away from the Etihad Stadium, having previously spent time on loan at Huddersfield Town, Bolton Wanderers and most recently Dutch outfit FC Den Bosch.
Mbete has been at Manchester City since the age of 12, and made his first-team debut for the Sky Blues in the Carabao Cup in 2021, starting during a 6-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium.
The centre-back has also featured in the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup for Pep Guardiola’s side, and has been an unused substitute on 18 occasions in the Premier League.
Mbete was involved in Manchester City’s recent pre-season tour of the United States, and has completed a season-long switch to Northampton Town for the 2024/25 campaign, upon returning to the United Kingdom.

The defender has completed a season-long loan move to Sixfields Stadium, with the transfer not including an option to make the transfer permanent.

A Manchester City statement, said: “Luke Mbete has joined League One side Northampton Town on a season-long loan. The versatile centre-half, who joined City as an Under-12, will link up with the Cobblers for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
“Everyone at the Club wishes Luke well in his loan with Northampton.”
How have Northampton Town reacted to the transfer?
In a statement on their website, Northampton Town manager Jon Brady said: “We are very pleased to bring Luke in.
“He is very highly rated by Manchester City and we thank them for trusting us to continue the development of one of their young players. I am sure our reputation for developing players has again counted in our favour.
“Luke has a decent amount of experience in the Championship, League One and also abroad, and he has been in and around the Manchester City first team, both on their bench in the Premier League and also playing regularly during pre-season.”
