Pep Guardiola has teased the potential of a brand new goalscoring duo for Manchester City this season, whilst admitting that the relationship will need a bit more time.

The reigning Premier League champions’ season got off to the perfect start at the weekend, claiming the first piece of silverware available by defeating Manchester United for the Community Shield crown at Wembley.

Bernardo Silva’s late headed effort to cancel out Alejandro Garnacho’s opener saw the contest forced into a penalty shoot-out, with Manchester City coming out on top via moments of brilliance from Ederson and a decisive strike from Manuel Akanji.

The contest also saw the competitive debut of Savinho at Manchester City, following the Brazilian’s £33.6 million move from Troyes earlier this summer. It also begins the mouthwatering prospect of a new deadly combination in attack for the Etihad club.

Speaking to the media after City’s Community Shield win over Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, Pep Guardiola was keen to discuss the potential impact of Savinho with Erling Haaland this season.

“Savinho will get it soon,” Guardiola said. “He will understand it perfectly. I saw many, many actions last season from Savinho, going to the byline, cross to the near-post, the far-post and (Cristhian) Stuani, (Artem) Dovbyk – the strikers from Girona scored a lot, a lot of goals.”

Guardiola continued, “He’s so fast in transition, so fast, can do 30, 40 metres. I know he can play every three or four days; this is one of the details that always we take a look at, how reliable the player can be, playing every three or four days otherwise cannot be at big, big teams because the demands are like that, playing every three, four days.

“And I have the feeling that he’s so strong playing regularly, so that’s why a lot of games, a lot of minutes.”

The 53-year-old also made a point of mentioning one of Manchester City’s more fringe players from the last campaign, as he said, “Even Matheus (Nunes) made some glimpses of exactly what he can be with the ball and his pace (against Manchester United).

“Because we don’t have much of a long squad and there’s a lot of games, but everyone is going to help us.”

On the top of Matheus Nunes, the Portugal international will also be hoping to impress this season, having somewhat struggled during his debut campaign for Manchester City following a big-money move from Wolves.

The expected departure of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid will also open up greater opportunities for further game time within the Manchester City squad this season, with Pep Guardiola likely to rotate his options of players, utilising names in numerous positions.

For Matheus Nunes, it remains unknown what that could mean for him personally, however the praise for his traits and glimpses of brilliance in the opening contest of the season can only benefit his chances of redemption this campaign.
