Julian Alvarez’s record-breaking transfer from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid has been thrown into jeopardy, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 24-year-old is poised to complete an initial €75 million exit from the Etihad Stadium this summer, with the club-record transfer fee potentially rising to €95 million subject to add-ons, following an agreement between Manchester City and Atletico Madrid.

The agreement had been expected to allow Alvarez to swap the Premier League for La Liga, with the striker having moved to Manchester City for £14 million from River Plate in 2022.

Alvarez has made 103 appearances and won six trophies for Manchester City since his arrival from South America, including winning two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, alongside lifting the FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

The forward has also won both the FIFA World Cup and Copa America with Argentina since arriving in east Manchester, and helped Pep Guardiola’s side to silverware last season, registering 32 direct goal involvements across all competitions.

The Argentina international signed a long-term contract extension until 2028 with the Sky Blues last year, but is poised to sign for Atletico Madrid, despite rivalled interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.

Despite Manchester City and Atletico Madrid agreeing a sizeable €95 million deal, the move to the Cívitas Metropolitano has been thrown into potential jeopardy, according to a Fabrizio Romano report relayed by outlet All About Argentina.

The contract offer from Atletico Madrid is reportedly ‘not what Alvarez expected’, with the potential for the deal to ‘collapse’ should the 24-year-old not accept the currently tabled offer.

The Spanish club and Alvarez are further claimed to be set for ‘tense hours in negotiations’, after the salary offered by PSG exceeded that of Atletico’s.

The transfer would see Alvarez becoming Manchester City’s most expensive sanctioned sale, with the Sky Blues also set to earn a staggering £67.5 million profit, should the deal materialise.
