Manchester City midfielder travels for medical ahead of multi-million summer transfer
Alex Robertson has travelled to the south of Wales for his Cardiff City medical ahead of completing a permanent transfer from Manchester City this week.
The Australian youngster has come into the summer transfer window with plenty of uncertainty surrounding his club future, and having been excluded from Manchester City’s pre-season tour of the United States, a deal was expected for the player.
Given City’s openness to an agreement for the 21-year-old, a transfer frenzy erupted amongst clubs in the Championship and League One after a stellar campaign for the playmaker at Portsmouth’s Fratton Park last campaign.
Despite his loan spell on the south coast ultimately ending in injury disappointment, the midfielder was a bright spark in John Mousinho’s squad that secured promotion back into England’s second division.
But Pompey now appear set to lose out in their pursuit of a renewed relationship with the player ahead of their new campaign in the Championship, with a deal close to completion between Manchester City and Cardiff City.
That is according to the information of WalesOnline’s Glen Williams and Mathew Davies, who reveal that Alex Robertson is now set to undergo a medical at Cardiff on Monday ahead of a permanent move to the club from the Premier League champions.
The 21-year-old has long been linked with a move to the Welsh capital this summer, and the report points out that only the ‘fine details’ remain to be sorted in a deal that could eventually be worth in the region of £3 million.
Cardiff City’s interest in the Australian international midfielder was first reported by WalesOnline almost three weeks ago, and a deal has not been easy with interest and competition from the likes of Hull City and his former loan club, Portsmouth.
Robertson’s move to Cardiff City will end a long-term association with Manchester City, having first signed for the club as an Under-15 and progressed into the Elite Development Squad after signing his first professional contract in July 2020.
It will also end a run of two successive loan spells away from the Etihad Stadium, having endured experiences with Ross County and Portsmouth, with the latter having been far more beneficial for his footballing development.
Many Manchester City fans will likely keep an eye on the progress of Alex Robertson at Cardiff, with the player building a strong reputation as being a footballer with a fine career ahead of him, and no doubt he will move on with the club’s best wishes in hand.
