Manchester City plot showdown contract talks 332-appearance star amid hardline Saudi Arabia stance
Etihad executives are planning to make Ederson the third Manchester City goalkeeper to sign a new contract this summer, following fresh deals for Stefan Ortega and Scott Carson.
The 30-year-old had been heavily linked with a potential summer exit from the Etihad Stadium, amid interest from two Saudi Pro League clubs, but now looks to set to remain at Manchester City for an eighth season.
The Brazilian, who missed Manchester City’s final matches of last season and the Copa America due to a facial fracture, has been part of Pep Guardiola’s recent pre-season tour squad of the United States, despite speculation surrounding the goalkeeper’s future.
Ederson has made over 330 appearances since signing from Benfica for £35 million in 2017, and remains Manchester City’s first-choice shot-stopper despite competition from second-choice star Stefan Ortega.
The goalkeeper started 43 times for the Sky Blues last season and could be set to extend his stay in east Manchester, just weeks after being linked with a big-money move to the Middle East.
Manchester City had held out for over £40 million to sell the goalkeeper this summer, with Ederson now set for contract talks with the Blues surrounding a fresh deal, having signed his last agreement in September 2021.
After both Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad chose against pursuing a deal to sign the 30-year-old this summer, Manchester City are reportedly planning to offer the shot-stopper an improved contract at the Etihad Stadium, with the goalkeeper currently contracted until 2026.
HITC claim that the Etihad bosses plan to ‘open talks’ with the Brazilian international surrounding a new deal despite the recent transfer saga, and that the Sky Blues are planning to reward the goalkeeper with a ‘bumper’ new contract.
If agreed, the new contract would reportedly see Ederson become one of the highest paid goalkeepers in the world, and the third shot-stopper to agree fresh terms with Manchester City this summer.
Manchester City are additionally set for contract talks with Kevin De Bruyne, who is out of contract at the Etihad Stadium in 2025, and has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia this summer.
