“I don’t know where this came from” – Pep Guardiola issues update on Manchester City future
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a further update on his Etihad Stadium future, amid questioning over his chances of becoming the next England boss.
The Three Lions are set for a major period of transition across the coming years after former coach Gareth Southgate brought an end to his tenure following another failed attempt at winning the nation’s men’s team’s first piece of silverware since 1966.
Whilst a number of names have been linked with the position, including the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino among others, Pep Guardiola was also mentioned with his Manchester City contract expiring in the summer of 2025.
But the 53-year-old appears more driven as ever for future success with the reigning Premier League champions, and when asked how he remains motivated to continue as City manager for so long amid continued triumphs, he explained, “They offered me a job, and I like it!”
“I’m fortunate to have a job. I know when you win, you have more chance to continue, but this is the point,” the Manchester City tactician continued during a press conference on Friday evening.
Continuing on the subject of change amid the arrival and departures of managers throughout the Premier League, Pep Guardiola said, “Maybe I’m one of the oldest ones (in the Premier League), in terms of (staying at) the same club. Yeah, it’s the world of football.
“When you don’t have results, the boards maybe before in England had more patience, and now they change, they change. And always when you change it’s to improve, and the season is too long, and we see step by step.
“Adapt to new managers, try to discover what they want to do. When you play against managers that you played against 10, 12 times in the last years, we know eachother quite well. But with new managers it’s try to understand what they do, we have time for that.”
Following the exit of Gareth Southgate from the England managerial position this summer, and despite being sensationally linked as an option to become his successor at Wembley Stadium, Pep Guardiola further emphasised his stance of happiness at the Etihad Stadium.
“I’m the manager of Man City, I’m here, I’m really pleased, and I cannot say anything,” he said. “I don’t know where this came from, but I’m really satisfied here and we’ll see what happens.
“I’m desperate for when the players are ready to come back, to start to train all together and refresh what we have to do at some things maybe in our future.”
Manchester City bosses are continuing to be hopeful in their attempts of renewing Pep Guardiola’s contract beyond next summer, but will simultaneously allow the Catalan the time and space he deserves in order to make a decision on his future in comfort.
