When is the 2024/25 Champions League Group Stage draw?

Manchester City will discover their opponents for the newly-formatted UEFA Champions League later this month.

Pep Guardiola’s side will be involved in the expanded version of the competition this season, with Manchester City having qualified as a top seed as a result of their record-breaking Premier League title triumph in May.

The Sky Blues will be bidding to win the Champions League for a second time in three years, as Manchester City lifted the trophy as part of a landmark treble triumph in 2023, beating Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul, courtesy of Rodri’s historic second-half strike.

City, who were eliminated via a penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium last season, are also set to be involved in an expanded version of the FIFA Club World Cup next year.

The Champions League have announced major changes to the competition for the upcoming campaign, with Manchester City playing eight matches during the Group Stage, and being part of a 36-team league table.

Matches will take place between September and January, with Manchester City to play four games at the Etihad Stadium and four away from home.

When is the Champions League Group Stage draw? 

The draw for the group phase of the competition will take place on Thursday 29th August 2024.

How will the Champions League Group Stage draw work?

Rob Harris reports that all 36 teams will be manually drawn using physical balls, prior to software randomly drawing eight opponents across the four pots which will be revealed on screen in the draw hall. A computer will then determine which matches are home and away.
