Manchester City star reveals record-breaking target for upcoming campaign
Josko Gvardiol has outlined an ambitious Manchester City target ahead of the start of the new season.
The 22-year-old is preparing for his second season with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, having joined the squad in New York for a pre-season tour of the United States last week, following an extended break after competing at the European Championship.
The versatile defender played a crucial role in the Sky Blues winning a record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title last season, scoring an emphatic brace against Fulham at Craven Cottage during the final week of the season.
Gvardiol moved to the Etihad Stadium from RB Leipzig for £77.6 million last summer, and also won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup during his maiden campaign in east Manchester.
The Zagreb-born defender made 42 appearances and scored five goals for Manchester City, with the Croatian international scoring his first goal for the club with a long-distance strike against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Gvardiol played predominantly at left-back for Guardiola’s side last season, and moved to the Etihad alongside international teammate Mateo Kovacic, who signed from Chelsea for an initial £25 million.
The 22-year-old has credited Kovacic in supporting him settle into life at Manchester City, and revealed his target for the new season during an interview with the Manchester Evening News.
“Moving to the UK was an adjustment, but I enjoy learning about a new culture. While I miss my loved ones back home, my teammates, especially Mateo Kovacic, have helped me settle in,” said the defender.
“I’m glad I could make a positive impact in the final months of the season, helping the team when it mattered most. Scoring that goal was a special moment for me, marking the beginning of my journey with such a prestigious club.
“This season, I’d love to help the team win the Champions League and win the Premier League again to make Manchester City the five-time champions.”
Manchester City begin their Premier League title defence against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge later this month, with Guardiola’s side bidding to win an unprecedented fifth consecutive title during the 2024/25 campaign.
