Paris Saint-Germain join race to sign Manchester City superstar – Meeting expected next month
Manchester City could be subject to the emergence of a new suitor in the race to sign one of their in-demand first-team stars this summer, according to reports.
Julian Alvarez has been at the centre of intense transfer speculation for a number of weeks, with the understanding in various quarters being that the 24-year-old is keen on more opportunities in the leading striker role at the top of European football.
The 2023/24 campaign brought about Alvarez’s most productive season to date in a Manchester City shirt, emerging as one of the leading goal providers for the club but operating largely in an attacking midfield position.
The Argentine international has recently spoken out about his ongoing situation whilst representing his country at the ongoing Olympics in Paris, admitting that while he is content at the Etihad, he will ‘think’ about his career following the conclusion of the tournament.
Now, a new report has emerged that points towards the emergence of a new potential suitor in the race for the Manchester City striker, and a club that could perhaps come closer to the financial demands of the Premier League champions.
According to the information of CaughtOffside this week, Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain will meet with Manchester City after the ongoing Olympics in the French capital to ‘get a better understanding’ of Julian Alvarez’s situation.
The report points out that Atletico Madrid were interested in the 24-year-old previously, but the La Liga club will not rush to make a move for the former River Plate forward, holding a belief that any terms on a deal will not be financially suitable for them at this moment.
From the side of the Premier League champions, Manchester City are unsurprisingly not pushing for the departure of Julian Alvarez, but the striker is said to come with a price tag of between £59 million and £67 million, if he wants to leave.
It is also made clear that Manchester City do want their World Cup-winning striker to stay at the Etihad Stadium, but will respect his decision should he wish to depart this summer in search of better game time opportunities.
Speaking to reporters in Paris earlier this week, Alvarez explained on his future, “There is a lot of talk. I am focused here [at the Olympics] because it is a short tournament. At Manchester City I feel very good, I played a lot of minutes.”
The Manchester City striker continued, “But we will see after the Games. First, if I can, I will take a few days off. Then we will decide. Maybe it’s annoying to be out in big games, players always want to help on the pitch,” he added. “But my season was good, so I’m very happy.”
Pep Guardiola has also been quizzed on the same comments, but refused to be drawn into conversations about possible replacements for Julian Alvarez, instead insisting that the player must also ‘think’ about his future.
City are likely to remain relaxed about the situation, and maintain their usual stance of allowing players to leave the football club should they show a clear desire to seek fresh opportunities away from the Etihad Stadium.
However, players must also bring suitable offers to Manchester City for that stance to be undertaken, as has been seen in the case of Ederson – who is interested in a switch to Saudi Arabia, whilst clubs in the Middle-East have not come close to his £50 million valuation.
