Manchester City look to bounce back from a humiliating exit in the Carabao Cup with a win against cross-town rivals Manchester United this weekend as they return to Premier League action.

Wednesday night saw Manchester City take on Southampton in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup – a competition that they had won three times in the past five years.

Southampton’s Sekou Mara opened the scoring with a powerful strike from a Lyanco cross, who stole back possession from a misguided Sergio Gomez pass – a game that was certainly one to forget for the Spaniard.

Just five minutes later, Moussa Djenepo would double the Saints’ lead, as the Malian glided the ball over the head of Stefan Ortega from long range, with the Manchester City back-up goalkeeper found wanting way off his line.

Unfortunately for Manchester City, a flurry of second-half substitutions from Pep Guardiola – including the introduction of the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne – would not be enough to cut into Southampton’s lead, as the Blues failed to register a single shot on target.

This Saturday, Manchester United are the hosts in Manchester City’s return to Premier League action, with Erik ten Hag’s men coming into the game off the back of a 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup.

While Antony’s curling strike in the first half was the only thing separating the two sides as the game approached 90 minutes, Marcus Rashford went and scored a brace to shut the door on the League One side, continuing the England international’s hot streak of form ahead of the weekend.

The reverse Manchester Derby fixture back in October saw Manchester City cruise to victory, as both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored a hat-trick, before Antony and Anthony Martial would make the scoreline a little more respectable from United’s point of view.
