Pep Guardiola reveals his Manchester City vision for new “devastating” signing
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has offered his own insight into where he sees new summer signing Savinho operating in his first-team squad this season.
The Brazil international became Manchester City’s first recruit of the ongoing summer transfer window, signing a long-term five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium, keeping his services in Sky Blue until at least the summer of 2029.
Following an exemplary season on loan with Girona last campaign, Manchester City have splashed the cash to ensure that they hold the keys to Savinho’s future, spending an initial £21 million on the 21-year-old, potentially increasing to £33.6 million through add-ons.
With the player admitting during his first media duties with Manchester City’s official club website that he sees himself as primarily a right-sided attacking player, many have been debating where Pep Guardiola could utilise his latest flair player.
Speaking on the subject of his newest recruit into Manchester City’s first-team squad this week, Pep Guardiola was keen to bring across his view of Savinho being a versatile option across the forward line for the club.
“He can play on both sides, left-winger, right-winger, can even play in the middle,” Pep Guardiola explained. “But we need [him] more especially on the wings. His one-against-one is devastating.”
Manchester City recruited Jeremy Doku from Stade Rennais in a big-money move last summer, with a view towards using the Belgian international on the right of a front-three. However, his performances on the left gave Guardiola and his coaching staff no choice but to re-think plans.
With both Doku and Savinho offering a more direct and flair route to goal in Manchester City’s attacking line, it provides more pressure on the likes of Jack Grealish and other players hoping to star on the wings for the club to perform when granted opportunities.
One player who is hoping to establish himself firmly in the plans of Guardiola is 21-year-old Oscar Bobb, who has started his pre-season camp in fine fashion with one goal and two assists in a 3-4 defeat to Celtic earlier this week.
