Manchester City’s defensive midfield star Rodrigo is being ‘told every day’ by one compatriot to join Real Madrid, in new quotes this summer.

The 28-year-old is evidently at the peak of his powers and establishing new levels of defensive midfield play not elsewhere available in the global game, setting remarkable standards for both Manchester City and the Spanish national team.

Having won everything available to win at club level, Rodrigo is now on the verge of yet more history for his national team this summer, playing a vital role in Spain’s route to the European Championships final on Sunday night against England.

But as talk of a City contract renewal continues to linger in the background, in light of his remarkable levels set over the last five seasons working under Pep Guardiola, one international teammate has revealed the lengths he is going to to play alongside him at club level.

Speaking to Tiempo de Juego at the ongoing European Championships, Dani Carvajal revealed that he is in the process of pushing Manchester City’s Rodrigo to make the jump back to the Spanish capital and join Real Madrid in the immediate future.

“I tell Rodri every day to sign for Real Madrid,” Carvajal admitted, as translated and relayed by transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano. “I tell him every day to leave Manchester, that there is no sun there and to come to Madrid, that we need him.”

But what is the response from the Manchester City hero, who remains a crucial component in the Etihad Stadium’s operation under Pep Guardiola, and is likely to be rewarded by a new contractual agreement in the near future.

“He tells me he has a contract… but he would be perfect for us,” Carvajal continued.

Despite Manchester City being in the transfer market for a new defensive midfielder this summer, that approach is not a reflection on any concern they have around Rodrigo’s long-term club future.

Instead, there is an acceptance within Etihad Stadium offices that Rodrigo requires more sufficient support across the course of a season that consistently demands so much of the Spaniard in a physical sense.

Rodri has not signed a Manchester City contract extension since July 2022, but there is a clear intention from club officials to reward him for his status in the squad, making him one of the club’s highest-paid players alongside Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.
