‘No progress’ on Manchester City player’s exit as club refuse to sanction eight-figure transfer fee

| Last Updated:

Manchester City have seen little to no progress regarding the future of out-of-favour full-back Sergio Gomez and a potential exit from the Etihad Stadium this summer.

The versatile defender has endured a challenging time with the reigning Premier League champions since first joining the club from RSC Anderlecht in the summer transfer window of 2022.

With Nathan Ake largely holding down the left-back role during the club’s Treble-winning season, and Josko Gvardiol’s arrival in the following summer market before excelling last campaign, Gomez’ opportunities are only likely to be further restricted.

As such, the Spanish international is eyeing opportunities away from the Etihad Stadium, with a number of clubs monitoring the situation hoping to take the former Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund man on a permanent agreement.

But for one club, that ambition is proving to be more difficult than first anticipated, with Manchester City standing firm on their valuation of the player, and his wages seemingly problematic when aligned with salary packages in other European leagues.

According to the information of Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, there has been ‘no progress’ in talks between Manchester City and Real Sociedad for Sergio Gomez.

It is explained that the Premier League champions are demanding €15 million for the sale of the Spanish international, and the La Liga club are simply ‘not willing to pay’ anything close to that amount.

In addition, the report also points out that the 23-year-old has a ‘Premier League-level salary’, and that figure would also require effort from the part of Sociedad to get close to such an amount, meaning there is ‘no easy resolution’ to the case.

Manchester City are highly unlikely to seek a replacement for Sergio Gomez in the ongoing summer transfer window, with manager Pep Guardiola more than content with Ake and Gvardiol as his left-sided full-back options.

Whilst Gomez’s representatives look to resolve his playing career in the coming days and weeks ahead, the player has been issued with positive news concerning what the immediate future holds on the pitch.

As confirmed by the Spanish national team this week, Sergio Gomez has been selected as part of the 22-man squad to embark on the 2024 Olympic Games in the French capital of Paris beginning next month.
