Manchester City could receive millions of pounds this summer through the sales of former players.

Pep Guardiola is set to see major investment in his Manchester City first-team squad this summer, with the Premier League champions expected to bolster in a number of areas, including central midfield.

Etihad officials will likely be forced to make a number of sales to facilitate such additions, although Manchester City could further boost their transfer fund through sales elsewhere, with major sell-on clauses active in a number of former player’s contracts.

The City Football Academy has provided huge financial gains in the past, with the sale of Cole Palmer to Chelsea in September 2023 seeing the total surpass the £260 million mark in just the past seven years.

The CFA has also provided Guardiola with first-team options, with Phil Foden, Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb all products of the prestigious academy programme which opened in 2014.

Former CFA graduates Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood-Bellis have both already provided Manchester City with transfer funds this summer, with Doyle moving to Wolves for £4.5 million, and Harwood-Bellis completing a £20 million transfer to newly-promoted Southampton.

A further 10 former players could provide funds through sell-on clauses according to the Manchester Evening News, with the potential for Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz to provide Manchester City with 40% of his transfer fee.

The Sky Blues would fetch the sizeable sum should Manchester United sign the 24-year-old, although a move to any other side would see Manchester City earn 10% of the sale.

The Cityzens have 20% sell-on clauses in trio James Trafford, Carlos Borges and Juan Larios, alongside a 10% sell-on clause existing in Leroy Sane’s Bayern Munich contract.

Lukas Nmecha’s contract reportedly contains a 15% sell-on clause, meanwhile Manchester City can earn 50% from the future sale of Doyle from Wolves.

Southampton trio Gavin Bazunu, Sam Edozie and Shea Charles also have sell-on clauses, although Manchester City won’t earn any money from Tosin Adarabioyo’s move from Fulham to Chelsea.
