15-appearance Manchester City defender offered ‘regular minutes’ by Champions League club
Sporting CP are considering a move for out of favour Manchester City defender Sergio Gomez this summer.
The 23-year-old made just 15 appearances and four starts for Pep Guardiola’s side during the 2023/24 campaign, and was omitted from the matchday squad for the Premier League finale clash with West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium last month, where Manchester City clinched a record-breaking fourth consecutive title.
Gomez, who completed an £11 million move to the Etihad Stadium from RSC Anderlecht in August 2022, wan an unused substitute on 35 occasions this season, and last featured for the Sky Blues during a win over Brighton in April.
The boyhood Manchester City supporter was handed his first start in September 2022 in the UEFA Champions League against Sevilla, with the Spaniard also involved in the Blues’ famous 6-3 win Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium a month later.
Gomez predominantly plays at left-back but has also featured in midfield for Manchester City, with the versatility of the former Spain Under-21s international leading to transfer interest ahead of the summer window.
The defender is the latest Manchester City player to be linked with an exit from east Manchester, with the two-time Premier League winner potentially set to leave the Blues in search of more regular opportunities.
The 23-year-old could be afforded first-team chances at Sporting CP, with the Lisbon club reportedly ‘eyeing’ a summer move for the Spaniard by proposing a deal modelled by the transfer of Pedro Porro.
Sport Witness relay claims from outlet O Jogo, who report that Sporting CP consider Gomez as a ‘great investment’ and that they could offer the full-back ‘regular minutes and ‘UEFA Champions League football’ next season.
The Liga Portugal side are interested in signing Gomez with a transfer structure similar to the one agreed to sign defender Porro in 2020.
Porro signed from Manchester City on an initial loan prior to a permanent purchase by Sporting CP, with the full-back having since moved to Tottenham in a €45 million deal last summer.
Porro was directly involved in 10 goals in 35 Premier League appearances for Spurs this term, and started against Manchester City last month, when Erling Haaland’s brace secured a vital 0-2 win in north London.
