Pep Guardiola wants to share trophy with Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp after winning Premier League Manager of the Season
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has insisted that he would like to share his latest Premier League Manager of the Season award with his colleagues.
The Etihad club became the first side in the history of the English top-flight to win the division in four successive seasons, in what became Pep Guardiola’s sixth triumph in the last seven seasons at the club.
The Premier League crown has also become Manchester City’s third trophy of the ongoing season, following on from triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup earlier on in the campaign.
Individual accolades were also claimed by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad, with Phil Foden winning both the Football Writers’ Association’s Men’s Footballer of the Year, and the Premier League’s senior Player of the Season award.
And now it is time for Pep Guardiola, whose tactical masterclasses across the course of the 2023/24 season have now been recognised by the English top-flight themselves through their leading coaching award.
As confirmed by the Premier League on Tuesday night, Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has been named the 2023/24 Barclays Manager of the Season following his latest historic campaign with the Etihad Stadium club.
Speaking upon receiving the prize, Guardiola admitted, “It’s an honour to have been chosen by the Premier League as the Manager of the Season. This award reflects the hard work and excellence of the people at the Club in all departments.”
“I am so proud to be manager of this group of players and to work alongside the brilliant coaches and support staff every day,” he continued. “Winning four titles in a row is one of the proudest achievements of my career.
“This is the toughest league in the world and our competitors have played some incredible football. When I arrived in England, I would never have thought that together we could win six Premier Leagues in seven years.
“We have done something unbelievable and to celebrate that with our fans last Sunday was a day I will always remember.”
However, while Pep Guardiola was clearly delighted at claiming his fifth Premier League Manager of the Season award in seven years, the Catalan tactician insisted he would like to share the prize with the likes of fellow nominees Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp.
“I want to share it, yes or yes! Especially with Mikel (Arteta) for the incredible job he has done until the last game, bringing us to our limits. Of course, for Jurgen (Klopp), for the unforgettable battles for many, many years.
“And Unai Emery, making something unbelievable again to bring Aston Villa to the (UEFA) Champions League. And Andoni Iraola, with Bournemouth, being his first season in the Premier League, doing what he has done, coming back from the tough start of the season.
“It is an honour to be alongside all of them and to win this trophy. We will defend this award as best as possible in the future.”
Guardiola and his squad could yet make it four trophies for the 2023/24 season with an FA Cup final on the horizon, in what will be a repeat of last season’s showpiece with a meeting against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.
