Greater Manchester Police launch investigation after teenage Manchester City fan suffers head injuries from Liverpool missile

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation into an incident during Manchester City’s 3-2 win against Liverpool, after a teenage supporter was left with head injuries.
Pep Guardiola’s side reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night, with goals from Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez, and Nathan Ake ensuring that the return to competitive club football ended with a positive outcome.
However, given the hostile nature of the fixture that marked the return, the pre-match build-up to the game was marred by stern warnings from officials at both clubs towards supporters in a bid to reduce trouble around the fixture.
Clashes between Manchester City and Liverpool in recent years have often been marked by incidents of violence and behaviour that both clubs have looked down upon, most notably the attack on the current Premier League champions’ coach outside Anfield before a Champions League fixture in 2018.
Nevertheless, it now appears as though the pre-match warnings to supporters have gone without any attention from a Liverpool standpoint, as Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation into a serious incident at the Etihad Stadium.
As per The Telegraph, a 15-year-old girl and Manchester City supporter suffered head injuries after being hit by a full plastic pint pot “weighted with coins” thrown from the Liverpool section on Thursday night.
Daniel Cornwell claimed – via The Telegraph’s report – that his teenage daughter had to have her head glued and has been left with “a scar for life” in the wake of the “horrible” incident.
The girl was seated in the lower South Stand of the Etihad Stadium when the object hurled from the third tier housing Liverpool’s supporters struck her on the head, before paramedics were called to the scene to treat the teenage supporter.
The Telegraph quote a spokesman from Greater Manchester Police, who says, “A 15-year-old girl was treated for head injuries and we will be investigating.”
Manchester City’s win against Liverpool on Thursday night means they will now face Southampton away from home in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, following the draw that took place at the Etihad Stadium after the clash.
