From Spain: Real Madrid eyeing audacious summer move for Manchester City midfielder
A sensational claim from Spain this week is suggesting that Real Madrid are eyeing an audacious move for lifelong Manchester City fan and first-team superstar Phil Foden.
Yes, you read that correctly, and no, this isn’t a joke. Although, it might as well be given we’re talking about a Manchester City academy graduate that has been formally associated with the football club since the age of four years-old.
Foden himself has made it very clear in previous interviews of his desire to remain at Manchester City for life, once telling BBC Sport, “I can only see myself playing for Manchester City, considering how much I’ve supported them from a young age.
He continued speaking back in 2021, “It always helps when you play for a club you support. When I was younger, it was a dream to play for the club, so never did I think I would make it to 100 appearances so early. I gave the shirt from that game to my family and they got it framed.”
However, those desires and affiliation to the reigning Premier League champions has not stopped Spanish media from spinning a remarkable claim this week suggesting the country’s biggest club is hot on his trail amid a string of fine performances this season.
According to Real Madrid-focussed outlet Defensa Central, the Spanish giants are ‘working hard’ to ‘persuade’ Phil Foden to join them from Manchester City this summer, despite his known long-lasting allegiance to the Etihad Stadium club.
The report claims that Real Madrid’s chief scout Juni Calafat is ‘attempting to make a deal’ for the 23-year-old superstar a reality this summer, after identifying him as the next superstar to make his bow for Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Phil Foden is in the middle of his most productive individual season in front of goal to date, scoring a staggering 18 goals and providing a further 10 assists across his 40 appearances in all competitions, starring more often in a central attacking midfield role.
Despite being just 23-years-old, Foden is likely to make his 300th appearance for Manchester City before the end of next season, and has already won a hugely impressive 16 trophies for the club having been integrated into the first-team by Pep Guardiola in 2017.
Foden still has an enormous role to play for the club this season, as Manchester City go in search of an unprecedented double Treble and retain all of their current trophies stored away at the Etihad Stadium.
